Falcon and Winter Soldier reportedly getting their own series on Disney’s streaming service

The testy relationship between Falcon and Winter Soldier is one of the most underrated aspects of Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, and Disney is reportedly looking to continue working on that relationship with a new limited series.

Both Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) will star in a limited series for Disney’s new streaming service, according to Variety. The limited series is expected to receive six to eight episodes, according to the report, but it’s unclear if Mackie and Stan will return to reprise their roles. It’s assumed they will, following an earlier Variety report suggesting that Tom Hiddleston and Elizabeth Olsen would reprise their respective roles as Loki and Scarlet Witch for two limited series on Disney’s streaming service. The Verge has reached out to Marvel Studios and Disney for comment.

Falcon and Winter Soldier do make perfect sense considering Disney’s reported decision to give limited series to characters who don’t have their own movies. Falcon and Winter Soldier have appeared in numerous films, mostly as Captain America’s best buddies, but they have never received their own standalone titles. Winter Soldier shared much of the screen with Captain America in Captain America: Winter Soldier, but it was still a Captain America joint.

Disney’s streaming service is expected to launch late next year, and it will cost “substantially less” than Netflix’s current monthly subscription fee, according to CEO Bob Iger. The company is working on developing original series and films for the service, including a number of shows centered on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a High School Musical series, a Monsters, Inc. show, and a new Star Wars series. Jon Favreau (The Jungle Book) is tasked with looking over the Star Wars series, which is called The Mandalorian. It follows a “lone gunfighter” and takes place after “the stories of Jango and Boba Fett.”
